Coconut Oil is an oil that is high in saturated fats, it comes from coconuts and is a good source of MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oils. Coconut Oil has benefits both while ingested and for a topical use.
If coconut oil can be used as a substitute to canola or olive oil, it’s been shown to be helpful in weight lose due to the MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) present oppose to the LCT (long-chain triglycerides) IT also contains lauric acids, which when ingested it reacts with enzymes to form monolaurin (a monoglyceride) which helps in killing harmful pathogens i.e. yeast or staph infections. That same acid is also able to help in maintaining the balance of hormones.
Now while coconut oil has some many benefits while ingested, it also has an enormous amount of topical benefits too. A few of my favorite benefits include that it hydrates, protects and strengthens the skin with a protective barrier. Coconut oil also has antioxidants that help reduce inflammation in the body, meaning it can help ease arthritis pain/other inflammations present and due to the antioxidants that fight free radicals it can help reduce the symptoms of osteoporosis.
Of course because of all these benefits above, I prefer to use it over the typical massage therapy gel that doesn't offer the same benefits.. Just as an added bonus the benefits that the client receives from the use of coconut oil… so do I while my hands/arms are covered in it all day everyday!
*If allergic to coconut please inform me prior to treatments or be sure to list in allergies while completing an intake form as I do continue to have a standard massage therapy gel in the office*
